Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) and the etiopathogenesis of Kaposi's sarcoma.
OBJECTIVE To review the current literature on human herpesvirus 8 with particular attention to the aspects related to the etiopathogenesis of Kaposi's sarcoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS The authors searched original research and review articles on specific aspects of human herpesvirus 8 infection, including virology, epidemiology, transmission, diagnosis, natural history, therapy, and Kaposi's sa...
متن کاملHuman herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) detected in two patients with Kaposi's sarcoma-like pyogenic granuloma.
AIMS To report the finding of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) in two patients with Kaposi's sarcoma (KS)-like pyogenic granuloma. This form of pyogenic granuloma closely resembles KS histologically and it has been reported that immunohistochemistry in such lesions may be positive for smooth muscle actin and factor VIII related antigen, which are typically negative in KS. In both patients the lesion...
متن کاملHuman Herpesvirus 8 Seroprevalence, China
To summarize the seroprevalence of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) in mainland China, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis based on available literature. Data show that differences in HHV-8 prevalence vary considerably among different ethnic groups and geographic regions. Blood-borne transmission could be a potential route for HHV-8 infection in China.
متن کامل[Human herpesvirus 8/Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus].
Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), a gammaherpesvirus implicated in Kaposi's sarcoma, primary effusion lymphoma, and Castleman's disease, encodes several pathogenically important cellular homologs. To define the HHV-8 transcription program, RNA obtained from latently infected body cavity-based lymphoma 1 cells induced to undergo lytic replication was used to query a custom HHV-8 DNA microarray contai...
متن کاملNon-Detection of Human Herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) DNA in HHV-8-Seropositive Blood Donors from Three Brazilian Regions
Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), also known as Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), is the etiologic agent of all forms of Kaposi's sarcoma, primary effusion lymphoma and the plasmablastic cell variant of multicentric Castleman disease. In endemic areas of sub-Saharan Africa, blood transfusions have been associated with a substantial risk of HHV-8 transmission. By contrast, several studi...
